How to choose a calligrapher
by Peggy Scheller
Calligraphy, beautifully addressed envelopes, the first impression to greet your guests, helps set the tone for your affair.
Once you have chosen that perfect invitation or announcement you need to decide how to address all those envelopes.
Calligraphy can be drawn by hand or computer generated. Many times the computer generated is a closer match to what is on the invitation because companies
manufacturing invitations are using computer generated typefaces.
It is best to choose the same typeface as that on your invitation or one which will complement or harmonize with the shapes of the letters.
Always ask to see a sample of the calligrapher’s work to be sure you are pleased with the quality. Pricing will vary depending on the complexity of the typestyle, especially with hand drawn calligraphy.
Make sure your calligrapher will adjust type size, color, spacing and placement to match your envelope size.
Whether you hire a calligrapher or address your envelopes yourself be sure to write everything out instead of using abbreviations.
For a more attractive look numbers between one and twenty may be spelled out rather than using the numerical form. Outside envelopes should bear the complete names of your guests plus their address.
Inside envelopes only bear the guest’s title and surname dropping the first name.
If children under the age of eighteen are invited, their first names would appear on a line beneath their parents’ names. If you have any other questions about calligraph,
